The cost of focusing on one thing
Ben McAdam
In the past few weeks, I took time off to be with my kids for sick days and school events, and now the school holidays are coming up.
That doesn’t mean business stops. I’ll still be on calls with clients and helping them move forward. What it does mean is I’m willing to let the less important things (like some admin or side projects) wait.
This is the part most people miss about focus. It’s not just picking one thing. It’s being okay with letting other things slide.
Tim Ferriss once wrote about “the art of letting bad things happen.” He took a big trip, and while he was away a fulfilment company shut down and monthly orders dropped 20%+. But he came back richer in a different sense, and it was worth it.
I feel the same about my upcoming conference in Bangkok. I’ll lose two workdays to travel, but the ideas, connections, and energy I gain will far outweigh the lost time.
If you want the big wins, you have to let some small things go.
What big wins would you be able to hit, if you could let some small things go?
