Didn’t fit in with other accountants

Ben McAdam

What got you into business? What’s your superhero origin story?

I’ve been thinking about mine.

For me, I was into classical piano, programming this online game, and then my uncle gave me a book, and then just off I went. New obsession unlocked.

The book was “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and then a couple of his other books. They helped me fall in love with the idea of business. I loved its flexibility, its creativity. You get rewarded for adding value to other people and to their businesses. It seemed so much better than this idea of jobs that I’d heard about.

In one of his other books, I heard that the accountant and the lawyer should see everything in the business. I’m like, “Aha, I’ll not be a lawyer” because that didn’t sound fun. So I went into accounting and worked as an accountant for a while.

I didn’t really fit in with the other accountants because it’s all about dotting i’s, crossing t’s, filing compliance, keeping up with all those rules.

Whereas for me, I got into it because I wanted to grow businesses, to be in business, and to help people with their businesses.

I didn’t really fit in. But I had a bookkeeping business I sold, an accounting practice that I sold. So a good grounding in the numbers is useful, it’s a nice objective lens, but it’s all about growing businesses for me.

So that’s my origin story. What’s yours?
