Cash isn’t king when it comes to incentivising your team
Ben McAdam
Cash isn’t king when it comes to incentivizing your team.
In fact, I’ve got five other options for you.
They’re based on the book “Five Love Languages” by Gary Chapman, but I swear I’m not going to talk about your romantic relationship here. This is just about incentivizing your team.
- Words of affirmation. Say something nice about them, and maybe they want it in public, maybe they want it in private.
- Quality time, like more time with you for feedback and training, or some social fun time with the team.
- Receiving gifts. You could give them something to help them with their job, like a computer upgrade. Or something for a hobby or sport they’re into, or a dinner or weekend away for them and their partner.
- Acts of service. Do something nice for them, like you do something annoying and difficult rather than delegating it (just as a one-off). Or you could fire a problem client or customer that probably wasn’t profitable enough anyway.
- Physical touch. Careful with this at work, obviously, but a handshake, a high-five, or a fist-bump can be meaningful.
Here’s the thing: we tend to default to doing the things that we would like to receive (or wish that we had received), when any of these other options could be way more meaningful, rewarding, or incentivizing for a particular team member than cash.
Message me BONUSES on Instagram and I’ll send you my Team Reward Navigator Custom GPT. It’ll help you decide on the right bonus for your team member and for your business.
